As XP is loading, a blue screen briefly pops up for maybe one second with the
following info:

STOP: c0000218 (Registry file failure)
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\Systemroot\System 32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternative.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

The computer then reboots back to the Windows did not start successfully
screen. No matter what option I choose on this screen the same error message
appears. Doing a repair install is not an option as the installation disks
that came with the Toshiba laptop will only allow a clean install. Any help
to try and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried booting into safe mode and running chkdsk?

This might also help:

Will,
Thanks. Got XP to load using the link you gave me. It is not in the same
configuration where it was before the problem started but it's close. It's
working again and that is all that matters. I appreciate your help.
