new 74gb raptor very slow

Last response: in Storage

Is there any drivers I need to install? I have a GA-8IK1100 motherboard rev 1. Gigabytes website lists drivers for SATA RAID but not individually drives. Kinda disappointed. I was hoping for a noticeable increase over my old maxtor 40gb. My boot time is a lot longer. It's about 20 seconds to detect the drive. I was thinking about updating the BIOS. Any input would be appreciated.

The motherboard has to scan for SATA then PATA, so it will take longer. You should see a significant difference between the drives. You run HDtach or any benchmarks on the Raptor? Trying running HDtach and post the scores. Then we can see if there is a problem or not.

thanks for the replys. I downloaded and ran hdtach. My random access time is 8.3ms. My read burst time is 117mb/s and the average read speed is 64mb/s. Cpu was 3.5%. Now is random access time and average seek time the same thing? WD claims that the average seek time is 4.5ms.

Your random access time should be lower than 8.3, what SATA controller is your board using?

I thought it should be faster also. According to the motherboard manual it's controlled by ICH5R/southbridge. I was looking through the gigabyte FAQ section and I concluded that I should try and update the BIOS. Would it be a waste of time to install the RAID drivers?

I upgraded my BIOS to the latest version. I also downloaded the latest chipset drivers. When I installed them it said chipset target ICH4. How can this be right? According to Gigabytes website and my owners manual I have the ICH5 chipset. Am I misunderstanding this?
