Need help DETECTING my dialup com PORT

Anyone out there care to help me out with a dialup problem.

I run windows XP and until 2 days ago, my dialup was running fine.
Now, when l tried dialing, it cant detect a dial tone. l’ve checked
the connection and it works fine. The modem properties under device
manager indicates its working fine. l’ve tried deleting it and
restarting windows to be sure, but to no avail. And just noticed that
under the device manager, the ports are missing and windows will not
pick it up unless l add it in. And when l do so, it detects a COM.5
whereas my modem is set at COM.3 and port COM 5 has a problem in that
it has ? over it. l’ve tried uninstall and restarting the laptop but
it will not pick up COM 3. l’m starting to wonder if l have a hardware
problem.
