This is a bonehead question; I'm ashamed that I can't figure it out for
myself. My wife's XP computer puts the text for desktop icons over the
desktop scene (a photo). Her text is white directly over the photo. Looks
sharp. My computer has black icon text over a colored 'box' that pokes
through the photo. How can I change this?

Hi Jim

No worries. That setting is probably not where you'd expect to find it.

Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click on the Advanced tab and
click the Settings button under Performance. In the list of visual
effects, put a tick in the "Use dtop shadows for icon lables on the
desktop" checkbox.

Thanks, JS,

That did it all, right, but it took me from 'Windows Classic' theme to
WinXP theme. I went back to Classic (makes my computer look less like a toy,
I think), and the option held. So I'm fixed! Many thanks.

Jim

drop shadow effect in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP:
