Need a New Laptop

Morning Everyone, I'm hoping someone clever can help me out :0) I have £500 to buy a new laptop (no more than that!). I currently own a Compaq R4000 (bought in 2005) which has AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1.78 GHz and 1GB RAM. Anyway, I'm basically wanting to improve on these. I would like nothing larger than a 17" screen to the smallest at 15.4". I'm not sure about screen resolution, what ever works!

I'm after a desktop replacement that will be plugged in 24/7 so no worries about battery life. I will be playing games like Sims 2 and probably the new one to be released in Feb 09 so would like a good graphics card to enable me to play on the highest settings possible. Other than that I put alot of photos on the comp and my DP crowds it with music and we occasionally watch films on it, I also spend alot of time online.

I want the laptop to last a good few years and still be able to cope with new games ect. My prefered brands are Compaq or HP, I'm not too keen on Toshibas or Acer only because I've heard bad things about them (but I can be persuaded otherwise though) I'm living in the UK. I hope that's all the info needed to help me.

When I bought my current Laptop I was advised that Athlon were on top of the market in terms of future-proofing myself but am I right in thinking Intel have now taken their crown?!

Some models I've been considering are;

I know there's a Toshiba and an Acer in there but only because thier specs seem much better. Am I just paying for the brand with a HP?!

Thank you, sorry for being so long!
