Hi
I am trying, by phone, to help my father upgrade from win98 to winXP
home. We are running into difficulty. We got about 20% into the
copying of files when we got the "Cannot copy file bootvid.dll"
message followed by "Cannot copy file timesbi.ttf" followed by pretty
much *every* file not being able to copy. My father reports that the
first time he tried to use his newly purchased XP disk he got a
message along the lines of "cannot proceed due to faulty disk" or some
such. This warning never repeated in my time with him on the phone.
I suspect that the Microsoft disk is bad. Does that sound right?

Could be a bad CD but thats rarely the case, I would firstly suspect
his optical drive to be at fault. Also note not all win98 systems are
suitable for upgrading to XP, might be an idea to check his system
specs and verify that, or have you already ?.

Thank you for your help.
I seem to recall that an XP disk can do some kind of... er... "fake"
installation whereby XP checks to see if the system is
compatible/suitable for a real XP install. Would that be a reasonable
(or even possible for a "Home" version) thing to do, if the CD is not
the problem?

Could be anything from not enough space on C:, to trying to upgrade with
59 background apps running.
