Game Settings, Parameters, Etc.

EMPIREHOST: sheepfarm.game-host.org
EMPIREPORT: 6666

Registration Begins: 20:00 (EST) MON 21 MAR 2005
Registration Ends: 07:59 (EST) THU 31 MAR 2005

Game Opens: ~01:00 (EST) FRI 01 APR 2005
First Update: 19:00 (EST) MON 04 APR 2005

Game Highlights:

1) Players get choice from 4 formats of Start Continents,
each a specific shape. Start Continents have 46 total
sectors, 45 industrial and one mountain. 10-15 sectors
of water between start continents.

2) Uniform resources on Start Continents. Start Continent
Industrial Sectors have 40 minerals, 25 oil, 5 gold, and
25 uranium. Plains have zero resources. Mountains (on
the start continents) have a high gold content of 100 gold.
Elsewhere, resources are unknown.

3) Gorenew enabled.

4) Market is enabled, but the time to sell for Market and
Trade is 6 hours to reduce "Market Abuses".

5) There are expansion islands, players will have to search
for them. And they are defended. Resources on expansion
islands are less than what was on the start continents.
They will be a bit more various in size, location, and
defenses.

6) There is some Oil at sea.

7) No food. This reduces micromanagement and removes an
early fodder indicator.

8) Rolling Avail, with 100 roll-over.

9) Tech at log base 2.00, all bleed (25%).

10) Plague is disabled. ResPop is disabled. DrNuke is
disabled.

11) Game code is standard 4.2.20 RC1 with slightly modified
from standard standard units/planes/ships lists. Units have
1/2 mob gain and 1/2 max mob from standard, and planes have
max mob of 100.

Added plane 'f3' (tech 110)

Removed Torps from Patrol Boat
Decreased firing range of Destroyer
added ship 'sh' SubHunter, which does what a Destroyer did,
but at tech 90 and it doesn't carry units.

Added Shepherd unit (tech 10)

Added 7kt nuke (tech 155)

12) Deity will NOT be playing.

13) Countries start with 4 sanctuaries, to get the game started
quicker, but civ growth is reduced [from 30%] to 21% (so that
shelling/bombing civs is painful in the event that this occurs),
and UW growth is reduced from 15% to 12%. But the cost to keep
active mils has been reduced from $5 each per update to $4.

14) All players start with 4*/4/4/4 for Tech/Res/Edu/Happy levels.
(*) Note that players start with additional tech depending on the
start continent selected, see the next section for details.

15) Deity will not ask for player's "rank", as I will be treating
all players equally.

16) Deity is requiring a minimum of 8 players for the game, this
is so that players who think that they might want to play, but
don't want to get stuck in a tiny game will have an out in the
event that the minimum game roster is not met.

17) Game start date was carefully chosen to avoid players from
being too busy from visiting family on Easter Weekend and
confusion with daylight saving time clock adjustments.

players must select one. failure to select will result in a
failed registration.

NOTE: YOUR ACTUAL MAP MAY ROTATE +/-60degrees OR FLIP 180degrees
or BOTH.

Now for the twist on the start continents:

For each type of start continent, players get an additional tech
amount, as per the following formula:
additional tech = (total # of player countries / 4) /
(# of countries of that start continent type)

ie: say we get 20 players with the following ratio's,
2 Clubs, 8 Hearts, 6 Diamonds, and 4 Spades, then:
The Clubs countries get an additional 2.5 tech.
The Hearts countries get an additional 0.625 tech.
The Diamonds countries get an additional 0.833 tech.
The Spades countries get an additional 1.25 tech.
This way, if you pick a popular country shape, then others must
feel that it is a safe country to pick as well, and less 'handicap'
will be awarded. But if few pick the same country shape as you,
then you will be compensated for your choice with additional
starting tech.

So what do you do? Play it safe and go with Hearts or Diamonds,
or go for Clubs or Spades and hope no one else is willing to risk
it? Can you bluff your way out of it?

Update Schedule:
1 Update / 20 hours - for the first 6 updates
1 Update / 30 hours - for the next 12 updates
1 Update / 40 hours - for the next 18 updates
1 Update / 50 hours - for the remainder of the game

One update/weekend skipped during the 20/30/40 hour phases.
Also a 1 week game-down scheduled for early May.
Pre-Planned Game Holiday Update Skippages:
MON 30 MAY 2005 : Memorial Day
TUE 05 JUL 2005 : 4th of July

BLITZ INFO:

A daily small practice test blitz was set up and running at
sheepfarm.game-host.org/6666.

There are 4 of each type of start continent:

Clubs: 1/1 : 5/5 : 9/9 : 13/13
Hearts: 2/2 : 6/6 : 10/10 : 14/14
Spadess: 3/3 : 7/7 : 11/11 : 15/15
Diamonds: 4/4 : 8/8 : 12/12 : 16/16

The blitz will reset daily at ~8am (EDT), with half-hourly updates.

The purpose of this test blitz is to allow you to test your
connections and get a feel for each map type. The last test
blitz will end at 7:59am on 31 Mar 2005 so that I can then
begin preparing to build the world.

Win Conditions:
There are no pre-set win conditions for this game. You are at the mercy
of your peers to come to a reasonable agreement for what would be a fair
endgame scenario.
To declare victory, a "win declaration" must be made via the in-game
announcements, and then active players have one update period (except
during pre-planned breaks, during which time the skipped days do not
count as elapsed time) to post any rejections to the win declaration.

Version Report:

More Game Info:

1) The game is hosted on a dedicated box for the game. The server,
DSL modem, and 10/100 switch are all on a 500VA UPS, to help ensure
minimal downtime with the game. I don't have a static IP address,
so I'm using one of those dynamic IP mappings, through a service at
www.dyndns.org. In the (rare) event that my DSL modem has to be
rebooted, the dotted quads IP address will change. If a new IP
address happens, it may take several minutes to propagate to your
realm. One thing to do is to try a nslookup service, such as:
"http://www.kloth.net/services/nslookup.php" and enter the addr:
"sheepfarm.game-host.org" and scroll down and see if it has a new
IP address there.

2) Because the game is running on a Win2K system, some of the info
files have had their names slightly altered. Info pages such as
"Attack" have changed to "cattack" to distinguish them from their
lower-cased cousins. Just try to remember to put a "c" infront of
info pages for commands that start with a capital letter which also
would have one with a lowercase letter.

3) I have an assistant deity, Ski, who will be joining me to help
keep order in the PettingZoo. Ski is a well respected player in the
empire community and is getting his first taste of deiting here, so
everyone please be sure to abuse him well.

4) In the event that we have unbroken countries, I wish to announce
my policy of what I plan to do about them. In the interest of
keeping the game on schedule and keeping it balanced, I've decided
that I would "run" those no-show countries for the first 4 updates,
while looking for replacement players. If I don't find a replace-
ment within that time, I will then neuter those start continents
into something similar to the expansion islands.

5) Yes, there are expansion islands available, but they must be
"earned".

6) No, food is not required.

7) Co-Rulers are welcome.

8) Yes, there are sheeps here, or at least Shepherd Units.

9) Plague is Disabled.

10) Weekly server maintenance is scheduled for Saturdays for upto
about an hour of downtime sometime between the hours of 14:00 and 19:00.

NOTICE: INFORMATION CONTAINED HERE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE PRIOR TO THE
START OF THE GAME. IT IS THE PLAYER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO VERIFY THE
ACTUAL GAME'S SETTINGS. DEITY IS MAKING A BEST EFFORT TO RELAY INTENDED
GAME CONFIGURATION, AND DOES NOT PLAN ON MAKING ANY MAJOR DEVIATIONS TO
THESE PUBLISHED PARAMETERS, BUT SOME MINOR CHANGES WILL LIKELY RESULT
TO ADJUST FOR PLAYER BASE, ETC.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, that PZ4 will be implementing the
new "SEMI-HIDDEN" code, where all fields in the power report
for other players will have all the digit characters replaced with "?"
characters.

This is not an officially approved or endorsed change. This is my
personal flavor-enhancing additive to the game.

The "digit characters" -- you mean all the numbers? That's weird.

In the blitz section you write the below. I understand the four
shapes, but what do the numbers refer to?

There are 4 of each type of start continent:

Clubs: 1/1 : 5/5 : 9/9 : 13/13
Hearts: 2/2 : 6/6 : 10/10 : 14/14
Spadess: 3/3 : 7/7 : 11/11 : 15/15
Diamonds: 4/4 : 8/8 : 12/12 : 16/16

I used the term "digit characters" so as to not be confused with the
general term, numbers.
ie: "4.7K" will be displayed as "?.?K", not "????" as one may
misunderstand if I were to say all numbers are replaced.

they refer to country name and password.
ie: Clubs countries have country numbers 1, 5, 9, and 13.
The default password for these countries in this
case is the same as the country name.
This is a common convention in empire for blitzes,
and I was just letting peeps know which countries
are what shapes in the test blitzes.

Ok, guys, here is your chance to be witty, and come up with a
country name that has meaning for the country shapes.

ie:

any Motorhead fans (ahem, Metallica?)? then "Ace" of spades
any liberals? "BleedingLiberals" (hearts)
any King Diamond fans (wait, Metallica can't play 2 countries!)?
any Golfers? Golf (clubs)

The list could go on... feel free to add...

Every now and then, some dispute flares up in the United States that
reminds us that sensitivities over language in that country run
especially deep.

The specific occasion was a meeting of the Sacramento City Council last
week, reported in the Sacramento Bee, in which one speaker, to emphasise
his point, said “I think we should call a spade a spade”. A
Councilwoman, African-American, objected to this vigorously, saying it
was an “ethnically and racially derogatory remark”.

Most people know that to call a spade a spade means that we should avoid
euphemism, be straightforward, use blunt or plain language. Most
Americans also know that spade is a rather outmoded derogatory slang
term for an African-American. Putting the two ideas together, though,
requires a person whose sensitivity to possibly offensive language is
greater than their knowledge of word history. (Nothing new about that,
though: remember all the fuss in Washington in 1999 over the word
niggardly, and all those in the US who think picnic refers to the
lynching of a slave.)

First of all, the spade in the expression isn’t the same spade as in the
slang term. The first is undoubtedly the digging implement. The second
is the suit of cards. In the latter case, the allusion was to the colour
of the suit, and originally appeared in the fuller form as black as the
ace of spades. The abbreviated form spade seems to have grown up
sometime in the early part of last century (it first appears in print in
the 1920s). Though they’re the same word historically—both derive from
Greek spathe for a blade or paddle—the one you dig with came into Old
English from an intermediate Germanic source, while the card sense
arrived via Italian spade, the plural of spada, a sword.

An oddity is that to call a spade a spade is a mistranslation. The
original was a line that the classical Greek writer Plutarch wrote some
2000 years ago about the Macedonians. He intended much the same
idea—suggesting that the Macedonians were too crude and unsubtle a
people to do anything other than use blunt words—but he used the word
skaphe, variously a trough, basin, bowl, or boat. It seems the medieval
scholar Erasmus misread it when translating the line into Latin and
Nicholas Udall copied him when making his 1542 English version. The
phrase has been in the language ever since.

If Erasmus had got it right, we might now be telling people to call a
trough a trough, and Sacramento would have been spared the recent fuss.

I've gotten a few requests for players who are looking for co-rulers.

It seems simple enough, ask a friend to co-rule with you. Or perhaps it is
awkward, or you don't have other players' emails. So, it looks like I am going
to offer my services as Matchmaker.

Lets start with some simple info:

1) What is your experience level?
(use the empire ranking scale http://wolfpackempire.com/rankings.html )

2) What amount of help do you want?
(ie: someone who does all the work and you do night watch or cover weekends /
an equal share / you do all the work and need a backup while you are sleeping
or away / other)

3) Are you looking for an equal, someone less experienced than you (to train),
or someone with more experience (to learn from)?

4) Provide any other information below that you think would be relevant:
( )

5) Your contact info (I won't publish this)
(email / country name(s) / first name)
and will you give me permission to give a prospective match your contact info,
this could help speed the process?

Send email to Bungy, and I'll either make a small webpage or periodically post
what I've got to RGE.

Well, this didn't go the way I expected. I have one submission. Here's what
that player is looking for:

--- begin ---
"I'll take anyone as a co-ruler"
--- end ---

New players, take note: coruling can be a terrific way to learn from a
better player.
