It seems to me that the quality between a dvd on a pc (good graphics card eg x1900xtx) and a dedicated but cheap dvd player seems to be radicaly different, the dvd players quality is much better whereas the pc's quality is very grainy and blocky, why is this? and what can I do to improve the quality on my pc?

DVD display quality is the same for a PC and a stand-alone DVD player. You apparently have something wrong with your PC.

Sometimes, a poor quality PC DVD player application will do a poor job of scalling the 720x480 DVD image up to 1280x853 on a 1280x1024 LCD PC display.

You need to provide more details regarding how you play DVDs on your PC.

DVD displayed on my Dell 2405FPW powered by my X1800XT looks excellent! Actually, quite better than when viewed upon my home DVD through my Sony 34" CRT TV...
