Hi, I have an MN-500 base station and a D-Link "g"
adapter (backwards compatible) on my computer. The two
can talk to one another, but the connection is dropped
after about a minute. D-Link recommends changing the
router's Preamble to "Short," but I don't see that option
anywhere in the Broadband Network Utility or Base Station
Management Tool. Anyone know who to make that change?

You shouldn't have to use that.
Make sure 802.1x authenication is off. That is the more likely source of
your disconnects.
In Windows XP SP1, a change was made to this authenication method such that
wireless connections that had this option enabled would have its connection
dropped after 3 minutes if the connection could not authenicate against
802.1x credentials.
To disable 802.1x authenication over your wireless network card...
1.. Click Start, point to Connect To, click Show all connections, and then
double-click your wireless network adapter.
2.. On the General tab, click Properties.
3.. Click the Wireless Networks tab.
4.. Under Preferred Networks, click your home network, and then click
Properties.
5.. Click Data encryption (WEP enabled).
6.. Click the Association tab, and then click to clear the Network
Authentication (Shared mode) check box and the The key is provided for me
automatically check box, if they are selected.
7.. Click the Authentication tab, and then click to clear the Enable IEEE
802.1x authentication for this network check box, if it is selected.
8.. Click OK two times to accept the changes.

Jason: Thank you. I did, as you suspected, have the
authentication checkbox checked.
