Mount and partition errors - propably hd controller problem

Hello, first time in tom's hardware!

i have a notebook acer 1524wlmi (amd64) for about 4 years. Suddenly it got very difficult to read cd/dvd, to write files to hd and finally it denied to start the OS (either linux or windows). Linux responded with read block errors (ata. something) and windows bad boot sector or something like that. Trying to repartition and install either windows or linux always failed. In linux always said can;t mount partition. Windows couldn;t repartition easily (3-4 times for deleting or creating to get it) and after a long-time installation, just stopped. One blue screen that showd said UNMOUNTABLE_VOLUME or something like that.

At first I thought the hard drive has "passed over" but I replaced it but all the same.

So do you think it's the hd/dvd controller problem and is something that is pointless to repair?

I would generally be suspecting the optical drive. . hoping it was the optical drive. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure it's the optical drive is to a) try another one, or b) get an interface converter and mount it in a desktop and see what happens.

New parts can be bad, too. It isn't usual that the controller is at fault, considering its an all electrical device, as opposed to the HDD/DVD drives, which are electrical and mechanical. If you've swapped these things out a lot, though, make sure the connectors are undamaged and seating correctly.
