I just got a new HP dv7 laptop with windows vista 64 bit and have a bit of delima being that I can not connect to a wireless network. Trying to setup the connection it will say that it is taking longer then usuall then connection failed and will still give me the option to save but will never connect at all.
When i hover the mouse over the connection icon in the bottom and it shows:
"Connection Status: unknown"
"Access denied"
no matter what I have tried will not go away. I ahve even tried unistalling the HP wireless manager and that has not helped either. Any ideas?
What are the parameters of the wireless network you are trying to connect?
80% of the time wireless connections are the fault of the Wireless AP / Router and a reset to setup defaults usually makes things work right away.
By the way, which dv7 do you have? The Intel one or the AMD one?
I do have some general recommendations though:
Set up you wireless connection manually, that is do input your SSID even if it is set to broadcast.
If you are a home user you really don't need WEP or WPA or anything like that. All they do is slow down your connection and cause crap like what you are experienceing. Remember, these are for encryption, access control. If you want to limit access to your wireless network, use MAC filtering or a captive portal.
If you are having connection issues using the control applet proided by the wireless manufacturer, try the Windows conneciton manager and vice versa, or, if you are feeling especially lucky, NetStumbler (although, I am unsure of Vista compatibility),
Lastly, this one is obscure, the the placement and angle of the antennas (of your AP and the client) do afect reception and range.
