Hi,

I just purchased a new Compaq Laptop and removed the HD. I put in a faster 7200rpm plus I wanted XP pro instead of Vistard.

I installed XP pro and the OS showed up as on drive E: It showed as the C: as being removable. I then did a dban nuke and started over, this time thinking if I unplug the CMOS battery in between that should clear out any memory of the old setup. NOT! She loaded just like it did before. On E:

Let me guess, I should have pulled out the main battery too? Or is there something else I'm missing? I'm not really crazy about taking apart a new laptop if I have to dig deeper. :pfff:

Thanks,
~Tram

You can use the Computer Management utility in Administrative tools (Control Panel/Administrative Tools) to change the letters on your drives.

I don't know how much farther you can demolish a notebook than to take out the CMOS battery...but to reset a motherboard's CMOS you must remove it from all power, including your primary system battery.
