I know it's a proven method, but what's the best way of going about it? Plenty guides, but they all seem to go round in circles gathering unwanted Download managers and other crap on the way. I just want to know which Ubuntu software to download and install it to a Flash drive to boot and recover files...

download ubuntu x86 or x64
download unetbootin
open unetbootin
select the ubuntu iso you downloaded
select your USB flash drive
click ok
installation/copy will begin and will notify you when finished

Which Ubuntu? Seems to be a wide choice!

desktop
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

edit
you don't want the "windows installer" version

select x86 or x64 towards the right side of the screen, then click start download
you should be downloading a iso image
