On the Group or User name under the security tab are the following identities:
Everyone
S-1-5-21-1060284298...-1004
S-1-5-21-1060284298...-1006
S-1-5-21-1060284298...-500
SYSTEM

On drive C: under Documents and Settings, there are these entries:
Administrator
All Users
Default User
ME
Local Service
Local Service.NT AUTHORITY
Network Service
Network Service.NT AUTHORITY

How does these entries relate to one another?
If I change the identity of any of the S-1-.., items to ADMINISTRATOR, I
get a message "Cannot Access Drive C:"

I do not think that you can change this information, but obviously
something is broken in your Windows installation. Try a repair
reinstallation: "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation)
of Windows XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315341).
