I have an m505 that I have been using successfully for a couple of
years. My wife was recently given a brand new (shrinkwrapped) m130.
How do I hotsync it without a second install of Desktop/Hotsync software
on my computer?

My reading of Help and Google posts suggests that I should be able to
just push the Hotsync button on the cradle and be prompted create a new
account. Instead, the computer never responds and things finally
time-out with a message on the Palm that
"The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not
be established. Please check your setup and try again."

About HotSync on each palm indicates HotSync v.4.0
Both are set to Local Cradle/Cable
My computer is running HotSync Manager 4.0.1 under Windows Me

Thanks,
Jerry

In the Windows System Tray click on the Hotsync Icon, add a checkmark by
clicking on both Local USB and Local Serial.

AS the M130 is a clean machine it won't hurt to do a hard reset (hold down
the on/of button - then the reset - then release the on/off button.) this
worked when my palm stopped syncing

I tried it with no improvement. Not sure why telling the computer to
listen to a nonexistent serial cradel should help with the second palm,
when it syncs the first palm with no problem.

I tried the hard reset, with no change.

When the Palm came back up, it asked if I wanted to erase all data; I
pressed the up key to signify "yes". Time was preserved, but time zone
and daylight savings settings were reset and all personal data was
wiped. When I tried to HotSync, the Palm still timed out with no
indication on the computer that a HotSync was being attempted.

Other thoughts?

In addition to checking the HotSync setting on the computer (in
Setup => Local), check both Palms in Prefs => Connection to see what
the details are for Direct Serial. There may be a baud rate or flow
control mismatch.

Prefs|Connections is set for Cradle/Cable. The cradle is USB, not Serial.

My recollection of setting up my m505 is that the name in the Palm was
set defined at first HotSync. How do you set a name on the Palm without
first HotSync'ing?

Ok, not that. Here are a few other things to look into, and maybe
one will get you somewhere. I had two Palms, one a IIIx and the
other a TRGPro. They had identical cases, except for a silkscreened
legend. Virtually identical hotsync cradles too. Both could hotsync
if I used the cradle that came with the TRGPro. The TRGPro wouldn't
hotsync using the IIIx's cradle. Are you using two cradles, one for
the m505 and the other for the m130, or just one cradle for both? (I
don't know enough about your two Palms to know if they use
physically similar cradles or not). If you're only using one, you
could try plugging in the other cradle - presumably the not used
would be the m130's.

Next, I recall seeing problems (not exactly like yours, but
similar) where the PDAs weren't recognized when trying to hotsync,
and in a few cases the problem was due to some incompatability using
a hub. If I recall correctly, the problems were usually caused by
using newer USB 2.x hubs. Switching to a USB 1.x hub or using no
hub at all allowed the PDA to hotsync.

Red Herring Alert!!! :) It doesn't matter whether your m130 has
a name or not. From your description of the problem even if it had
a name it still wouldn't be recognized as a USB peripheral by the
computer. You can facilitate the process by running the Palm
Desktop and predefining a new user for the m130, but until the m130
is recognized by the computer's USB hardware, it won't be able to
communicate with the computer. In other words, until something is
fixed it won't hotsync.

None of my Palms has a USB interface, so the Prefs utility shows
nothing for USB in Connections. Only several modem types, direct
serial, IR, CF modem and direct CF serial are shown. For your
Palms, check the USB settings. It may be that USB has no options to
select, but I can't check that with any of my Palms nor with my
computer (an older one running Win95 and having no USB support).

I am trying to use the m505's cradle. The one that came with the m130
appeared to be identical. Both Palm's charge on the m505 cradle, and
the m130 responds (although the computer does not) when I press the
HotSync button.

If still a problem by the weekend, I will bring the other cradle back
from our camp (using it as a charger) and try it.

I switched the cradle from a USB hub to a direct connection with no
change. Again, unsure why this might have mattered. Occasionally, the
hub would not be recognized if the m505 was in the cradle at boot-up,
but otherwise if the hub worked with the m505, why might it have
interfered with the m130?

Already tried creating a new user name on the Palm Desktop for my wife;
it didn't help.

A slightly different hardware design? The m505 and m130 may or
may not be using identical USB ports (the spec's have
changed/improved over time) and so might react differently with your
hub. Or your m130 may simply be defective. The easiest way to tell
would be to find someone else that has a computer and an m130 and
see if yours is recognized by that computer. Short of that, plug
your m130 into any computer's USB port (even ones that don't have
Palm's Desktop installed) to see if the m130 is detected. Bear in
mind that while I have a computer or two having USB ports, none of
these runs anything more recent than Windows 95 which doesn't
support USB, so I'm just speculating that the m130 should be
detected by such a computer.
