Using XP Pro. After a power failure, I am not able to log on.

I can get the login box, after I login, the system starts to work, the
backgroud is loaded then I see closing network connections closing and sving
settings and then the log on box comes back. I get this in any mode including
safe mode.

I have run chkdsk from the repair console and it fixed some sectors/files.

I have loaded another copy of XP on a spare partition so I can investigate
the problem.

Hi,

Could be a problem with userinit.exe, the file may be corrupt, or the
registry entry for it may be corrupt. You'll need to load the registry from
the failing installation to look at this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

To do it from the parallel installation, try using file/load hive. The
string you want is userinit, it's value should be:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

You might also place fresh copies of userinit.exe and msgina.dll into the
%windir%\system32 folder.
