For the past two days I have been following instructions from HP tech support
e-mail service concerning installing my HP 5300C scanner in WindowsXP. It's
all lame. Nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

It would help us to know just what HP tech support had you do, don't you
think?

I followed the tech support you suggested. Downloaded the drivers, cleaned
out everything on my hard drive, installed the driver sj664.exe and attempted
to install sj663mu which gave me a fatal error and didn't load. They even had
me try to install in safe mode which my machine wouldn't do.

Try the scanner on a different computer. That will tell you if the problem
is your scanner or with your computer.

The scanner worked fine on this computer until I upgraded to XP from '98SE. I
just went through the entire process of removal and reinstallation, again.
When I try to install sj663mu I get a fatal error. The file doesn't load. Any
suggestions?

I had a problem installing my hp6200C and I solved it by installing the
software and after it was completely installed, I connected up the scanner.
Occasionally the pc doesnt make a connection with the scanner so I
disconnect the scanner from the PC and wait about 1 minute before
reconnecting. That seems to work also... Scanners are strange beasts.
