xp and hard drives

i found that sometime when i load xp the c: drive becomes d: drive.when you open my computer it show only d: drive no c: drive i can't fine any reason for this. the real problem is when you put this computer back on the network all the mapping for software dosen't work.I HAVE NO EXTERNAL DRIVES.THE COMPUTERS ARE DELL

Do you use any type of external drives hukid up to it. What system you have anyway.
