I was given a Toshiba Tecra A1 to repair. Upon initial inspection everything but the HD seemed to be working so I pulled the drive and after doing a bit of shopping ended up here to seek advice about which drive to buy (click here to view the thread). The unit initially had a 30GB drive and since Toshiba offered a 250GB drive as an upgrade option, I bought a WD Scorpio 250GB drive (instead of the pricey Toshiba drive). The drive arrived a couple days ago and after installing it the laptop is not happy. Upon booting the laptop sounds 5 tones (not continuous). I can get into BIOs but I can't install Windows or boot XP off of a live CD (I get a BSOD reporting hardware issues...obviously). I could run XP off the Cd prior to the new hardware. I don't know the Post codes for Toshiba's Bios but it's a fair guess that the laptop is complaining about the new drive.
What I need to find out is:
1. Is the drive DOA? I don't have a spare laptop to test the new drive in.
2. Is the laptop rejecting the drive because the new drive isn't Toshiba branded?
3. The latest BIOs update I can find for the laptop is from 2003 (v1.3), is there some other update I need? I'm not sure if the laptop is not recognizing the drive because of it's capacity. Also, since the old drive was ATA5 (ata-100) and the new drive is ATA6 (ata-133), although the interface is the same is there a update needed for compatibility?
Any other ideas?
