How do you change the shutdown preference to default to "shutdown" from
"restart"?

I don't believe you can (I could be wrong, but I'm almost positive). It
defaults to the option you choose last logon.

Even when I choose "shutdown", it still comes back with "restart"

In the power option (control panel>power options>advanced tab) under the
section marked Power buttons. You can set the computer to
shutdown/hibernate/standby etc when you press the power button.
Alternatively, if you keyboard has a sleep button you can also set this so
that the pc shutsdow/hibernates or goes into standby when the sleep button
is pressed.
If you use the turn off computer option from the start menu you
automatically have the option to turn off, standby, or restart.

I was mistaken. I defaults to hibernate and even though I choose "shutdown"
the next time I go to shutdown it is set to hibernate again. John, how do you
change what the default is for turning it off from the start button?
