I am fairly new to computers and would like to upgrade my RAM. I see that there are PC2700s and PC3200s and etc. I want to upgrade 512 RAM. How do I know which one to pick?

Which bus speed version, 400 (2.4A), 533 (2.4B), or 800 (2.4C)?

If you can't figure it out, you can lalways get PC3200, as long as you have a board that supports DDR SDRAM.

With a 800 bus you will want pc3200 unless you are planning to over clock.

PC3200 for normal use, PC3500 or faster if you'd like to overclock.

You should use pairs if you have an Intel 865 or 875 chipset, or an SiS 655 series chipset. That enables 128-bit transfers, known as "Dual Channel" mode.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help. I got a few more questions though. Should I buy the 2X256 memory or the 512? Also, which brand is the best to buy?

If you have a chipset that supports dual channel mode (like crashman listed) then getting a matched pair (2x256) and running them in dual channel mode will double the memory bandwidth. If your chipset doesn't support dual channel mode then base your decision on how many memory slots you have available and how much total memory you want. One 1 GB memory module, for example, will be more expensive than 2 512 mb modules. If 2 memory slots are available then 2 512 mb modules would be the logical choice. So basically go with the cheapest option that suits your needs. I'm not sure if larger memory modules are always more expensive than two modules of the same total size, but just shop around. I like Corsair memory. They seem to support lower latencies than they advertise and are of high quality. Also I just read a review of a PMI dual kit today which was throughly tested and found to be of comparable quality to Corsair and other high end modules but cheaper due to elimination of middle-men. I may try them out myself when the kit I want is in stock at Newegg.

Cool..I did some research and I came down to buying 2X256 RAM from Kingston or Crucial. Also should I get unbuffered or registered?
