Stopping SATA drives before removal

How, in Windows, do you stop a removable SATA drive before removing it? For example, with USB drives, you click the icon in the system tray and tell Windows to stop the drive. Windows then tells you that it's safe to remove the drive. I have an external SATA hard drive, but I can find no way to tell Windows to stop the device so that I can remove it without risk of corrupting the data.

Any suggestions welcome!

Try the device manager. Not sure if it will let you disable it through there.
