I am running XP Pro. I have had no problem with the Backup utility until a
few days ago. It will not open. If I open the Task manager after clicking on
the utility, it is running in the 'Processes' area, but it will not open to
use. I thought I may try a System Restore, but my PC will complete to a
restore point. It seems these two errors may have come about around the same
time. Any Suggestions?

NTBackup.exe is a protected file so running system file checker should fix
it.
If you are running SP2 and while running SFC you are asked to insert the XP
disk you will need one with SP2 on it.
To run SFC:
Start>Run>(type) sfc /scannow (notice the space between c & / )

Thanks for the response, but it did not cure the proble. It never asked for
the CD if that matters. Any other suggestions?

Are you sure that you are clean of all malware & adware there are viruses
that disable this function and more.
Do steps 1-6 :

Run a free virus scan:

I did as you suggested. I already had Norton Antivirus,Spy Doctor, Ad Aware,
Microsoft AntiSpyware which I had all previously ran. Nothing was found by
any program. I still get the same results. NTbackup is running in the process
screen but will not open as a program.
Thanks for your help.

Randy lets try to reinstall your NTBackup. Go to Processes and end all
instances of NTBackup running.
Then put your XP CD in the ROM drive.
1) Start>Run and type cmd then click OK command prompt will open.
2) (type) "expand d:\i386\ntbackup.ex_ c:\windows\system32\ntbackup.exe"
(without quotes)
where d:\ is your cd-drive and c:\ is your windows drive.
These may be different on your system.
(notice the space between ex_ & c )

Hope this helps!
