Constant HDD Led Flashing

I can't figure this one out. In the last couple of days my HDD led has started to flash constantly as if there is activity but from what I can see there is nothing happening on the pc. It flashes even when no CPU activity is reported. I've updated and run my antivirus and spyware software and nothing.

Any ideas to try? Apps that give detailed info on HDD activity? I can't even tell if they are actually doing something or if the Led is just flashing!

How much RAM do you have? What OS? What background applications are running?

AMD 2100, 512 memory, Win XP
I've tried killing anything that doesn't look familiar in the processes tab in task manager but nothing helps and everything claims to be idle anyway! and no apps are running

Haven't had this problem before, and have had the same set up for over a year so I don't know what happened.

perhaps the LED complex connector has come loose and recieving bad signals?
