My acer 5315 hdd has given up I have a Seagate Momentus 160GB that has been used as an external backup drive, I have formatted it and fitted it in the acer, when I try to load xp it cant find the drive, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably because the drive is SATA. XP doesn't support SATA disks without a driver for the bus. You'll either need to find a driver or there could be a setting in your BOIS that will allow you to kind of emulate a ATA bus for XP to understand.
