AVG 7.0 Lock Up

Over the last week or so, each time I try to run AVG antivirus
programme (Free Ed.) it eventually locks up the entire system and
I have to hit the re-boot button and re-start. I've tried
uninstalling and re-installing, deleting as many of the old files
as I could find before re-installing. I've tried installing
PandaSoftware antivirus (came with the system, but I prefer AVG)
and it does the same thing, runs through the process with no
hitches until about 15 - 17 mins, then locks up the system.

Please don't tell me to change or discard the programmes in
favour of something else. AVG has been an excellent systems
monitor over the last 6 or 7 years for two separate computers
(Win98 & WinXP). I know it works, and I can't afford to buy most
of the my software, so finding something as good as AVG has been
a godsend. The basic question is, how do I check my system for
worms, trojans, virii, or just plain out of date and possibly
corrupted files that might be affecting the anti-virus
programme's ability to do their jobs. Is this common, is it
easily fixed, or at least diagnosed?

I'll keep track of your responses. Thanks.

Hi

Panda works very well with XP. What problems have you got with that?

Try the online Panda virus check for your system:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

and also these programs to check for spyware:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Spy Sweeper - www.webroot.com

Try SpyWareBlaster to stop intrusions:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Also see the following links:

Majority of the time you may have some sort of "spyware" program that is
causing the anti-virus utilities to stall. Spyware programs usually do not
register in the anti-virus definitions and you may need to scan for them
using other utilities. Here is a list of the most recommended, and free,
spyware removal utilities:

AD Aware SE 1.06
Spybot: Search and Destroy 1.4
CWShredder
Hijackthis

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta (--- XP/2000 only. You Windows CD key needs to
be a valid key and this is still in Beta).

It won't download. I get an error message (naturally, they never
explain what the error is) which tells me to restart and try
again.

Get spyware programs like Spybot and Adaware. Install them, update to the
latest definitions then run the programs one at a time.
