Does anyone know what the general measurements(height and width) of the viewable areas of 17", 19" , 19" wide, 20" and 20" wide are? Is the 19" wide actually shorter in height than the 17" ?

No, I don't.

I was searching for the answer to the same question.

In my case I have a 19" LCD and want to upgrade to a wide screen while maintaining the same vertical viewing area. I realize that I will need to move up to a 22" and possibly even a 24"WS, I just don't know which I really need.

I'd really like to know this, too. I'm surprised there isn't a page about screen size comparisons...

Very cool, thanks!

Not being familiar with widescreen formats, how do I choose the aspect ratio and correct (typical?) resolution so I can see the actual differences?

17 and 19 inches full screen: 1280x1024 resolution and 5:4 aspect ratio
20 full screen:1600x1200 resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio

widescreens have 16:10 aspect ratio
19 WS: 1440x900 resolution
20.1 and 22 WS: 1680x1050
