So I'm searching for these on the net, and I can't find much. All I hear are good things, but I can't find any for sale. Where can I get one? Is there anything I should know? EIDE, not SCSI.

Thanks.

my friend, I've heard bad things about them.  That was a while back though.  They don't make them anymore for a reason...

Didn't Kenwood market a 72x drive roughly the same time.
If I remember right, there was a class action lawsuit dealing with these drives also.

And I am sure the 72X is total BS. It may spin that fast during peak periods, but it wouldn't read it then. I think most should keep in mind max drive speed doesn't mean a whole lot. I have a 52x Sony drive, and an old HP CD-writer that reads at 32x, when I benchmarked the drives, the 32x HP drive actually substained higher read speads, if I remember right the HP was reading (substained over time)  23x, while the 52x drive was only managing 21x.

Actually, the drive spun at a much lower RPM. It basicly used (5 or 7) read heads and actually worked at 72X.

Truex and Kenwood actually were in it together.

Thats interesting, now if only they could make this hardware setup reliable. I had no ideal it had multiple read heads, sounds like a good ideal.

As I recall the drive with multiple read heads couldn't read CDR/W at all, though it has been a while and I may be mis-remembering.

Can't read CD-RW, this doesn't seem to be like a real big draw back (to me), I would prefer the extra read speed. CD-RW has become my new floppy, I use them real breifly to maybe transfer a small file back and forth, but anymore I don't do that much either. I have two network switches and a wirless router in my house, so while at home its easier to transfer over the network. Also I don't really even copy files on CD-RW even to take files somewhere, I keep two sets of CD-Rs around. One set is a decent brand name disc, to make personal backups on. The other is the cheapest discs I could find on eBay, and when someone needs something I give it to them on those cheap discs, then I don't care if I get them back or anything.

I think CD-RW have they place, but I think their use is limited. Anymore CD-R are so cheap, I don't feel bad if I end up throwing one away.

Currently I do use some DVD-RW discs for some backups, but mainly only becuase DVD-R discs are still on the pricey side (I know, storage/price they are that high).
