Backing up pre-recorded DVD?

Hi folks, I've just bought myself a shiny new plextor DVD burner and offered to back up a couple of pre-recorded DVDs for a friend. Trouble is my blank DVDs are only 4.7Gb and the first disc I need to copy has nearly 7.9Gb of content. When I make home movies my movie editor allows adjustable MPEG compression (to get more movie on a disc, albeit at a quality loss), is there software that will offer similar features for this type of job. my drive will burn plus or minus discs. As you can tell I'm not well up on this stuff. Thanks in advance,
Gene Stevo.

Unless you have a dual layer dvd burner you will have to burn it to disc.Dvd Xcopy will do it for you.Check out cdfreaks.com and there forums have everything you need on any type of burning.

Huge thanks for your prompt response. I see philips are due to release an affordable dual layer burner soon (still think I'll wait for Plextor). Your advice has been most useful. Thank you. Kind Regards, Gene Stevo.

you can always try DVD Shrink. That is what I use and it does good compression with minimal video quality loss.

Remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

Use dvdshrik to transcode movies. It's free and better (in fact, the best)

Wait for Plextor only if you want to spend 2x money for without any good resaon. The wiser option is buying LiteOn SOHW-832S today, which costs less than $100

Hi Spitty!

I've gotten great results using Smartipper, to rip the data to my HDDs, and Intervideo DVD Copy, to transcode and burn to disk, Intervideo DVD Copy will allow a 1 to 1 direct burn with the same quality, but it has to be burnt to 2 disks [not too bad with DVD media prices falling] just a little inconvenience to have to change a disk during playback, but the quality is well worth the inconvenience.

Just thought I'd share that with you.

How've you been doing?

Well I hope!

Ryan

Really? That's a good thing. I hope some freeware tools will allow this feature sometime.

When dual layer DVD media become cheap, then all of these technologies will be obsolete though.
