What is the purpose of such a device? I know what an amp does, but I have no clue on what a pre amp is.

On a side note, Has anyone had any experence with SVS subwooders? How are they?

This is a quick blurb to cover the main compoenents that go with a preamp. A receiver is a combintation of a tuner for the radio, an amp to power your speakers and a preamp to select devices, adjust volume, surround effects, and potential a DAC to convert the digitial signal from your SACD/DVD player transferred via optical cable to your system. Just as you buy a video card and a sound card seperately because the ones on most motherboards are not as good as the seperates, that is why people buy seperate audio components.

A pre-amp is mainly a receiver - the control center to combine all of your home theatre components togehter. It's called a pre-amp because though they contain powered unbalanced outputs, they usually don't push much juice and operate with the expectation that the owner would purchase their own dedicated amplifier to actually power the speakers (ie: pre-amp, as in processing before the amp).
