I'm a NEWB myself and was trying to take what was provided in the same article and improve on it...not because I felt I am any smarter than the people at THG...but because in 2 months pricing on Comp Components can change drastically.

Here is the rig I was able to come up with for $954.

Final Setup as purchased... (NOT COUNTING TAX, Shipping was free)

Lian-Li PC-61B Case $95.00
ANTEC Truepower True430 $80
MSI K8N Neo Plat (MS-7030) $125
AMD Athlon 64 2800+ $184
Crucial Ballistix 512MB (2-2-2-6-1) Ram $138
Lite-ON SOHC-5232BK $44
ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB $149 (YES a 9800 PRO NOT 9600XT etc)
Lian-Li 9-1 Card Reader 3.5" USB 2.0 $26
Seagate SATA 160GB 8MB Cache Barracuda ST31600023AS $113

<A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=183543#183543" target="_new">http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=183543#183543</A>

Im going to hold off on getting a DVD Burner until the Dual Layer +/- Drives are on the market. If I do grab a DVD right now it will be a single layer SHOW-1213S Lite-ON 12X DVD Burner.

TOTAL PRICE $954....INC TAX....$1028

The only trick on all of this was that I purchased the 9800PRO 128mb at BestBuy. Fry's Electronics has a Sale on the 9800PRO for $199 without rebates. Bestbuy had the card on sale for $179 after rebates...started at $249 - $20 Bestbuy discount - $50 ATI rebate. BestBuy price matched the card at $199 and I still get a $50 rebate.

I decided to go with the Crucial Ballistix memory. They just launched this line and it seemed like a pretty good deal for super low latency ram. I think they are probably priced lower than they would be normally...especially when compared to Kingston HyperX, Corsair Xtreme, Mushkin, etc.

I've used Crucial Memory before and the only reason I didn't originally consider them for this machine was because everything I looked at had a CAS of 3. I think the ratings of 2-2-2-6 are pretty darn good though and although my MOBO isn't dual channel I will probably be adding another 512MB stick of Crucial's Ballistix memory soon.

I wouldn't follow any of Tom's projects. If you're on a budget, I'd get an Abit NF7-S, AMD Mobile XP2500+, a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (256-bit), the largest Western digital "JB" drive you can afford, a Chieftec Dragon case, a Fortron Source 350W power supply, a Light-On DVD-ROM, and some Crucial PC3200.

Then I'd set that Mobile XP2500+ at 11x200 for XP3200+ speed.

Why would spend $100 on a case..and then another $100 on a power supply? I got an Antec Super Smart Midtower 350watt something...yeah, for only $64, and runs Lite-On 4x DVD-Rw,...well actually I have got to put in my 9800Pro yet because I don't get paid until the beginning of the month :(...It will be for $200 :D, biggest paycheck yet. Gonna pawn my old bike for $35 bucks and I'm gonna get it..yippee! Too bad it's almost a mid-range card now...oh well

If you dont plan on Overclocking go with 1 gig!
If you plan on doing some slight Ocing go with the PC3700, altough for the price difference id go with the 1gig and you can probly get a bit more speed than 400mhz with these sticks...
