I have Windows XP with SP2 and Office 2003 installed
My machine hangs when
1. I try to browse any site using IE
2. I try to go to windowsupdate.com
3. some time at rando point
I have no other software installed. The machine works great for 10-15 mins
and suddenly hangs. I have recently added 1 GB RAM from Crucial...I want to
narrow down the problem....

1. What antivirus do you have in place? Name, version, and whether the
definitions are current, please.
2. What firewall are you using?
3. What Service Pack level do you have?
4. Have you done any troubleshooting for viral and non-viral malware? If
so, what and how?
5. How do you connect to the Internet? ISP and method, please.

Since you've determined that your computer is clean and have recently
added new RAM, the problem is probably caused by the RAM. Either the
RAM is defective, or it doesn't play nice with the RAM you already had,
it isn't compatible with your motherboard, you have it in the wrong
slots because the m/b needs a certain combination, etc.
You can test the RAM with Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org. Obviously,
you have to get the program from a working machine. You will either
download the precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or
the .iso to make a bootable cd. If you want to use the latter, you'll
need to have third-party burning software on the machine where you
download the file - XP's built-in burning capability won't do the job.
In either case, boot with the media you made. The test will run
immediately. Let the test run for an extended period of time - unless
errors are seen immediately. If you get any errors, replace the RAM.
You can also swap out the stick(s) with other RAM, put in different
slots, etc. Make notes of what you've done so you are methodical in
your troubleshooting. Make sure you bought the correct RAM for your
motherboard. If the RAM is defective, contact Crucial for instructions
as to how to return it.
