Windows XP asking for a driver for external hard drive

Hello. I have bought a USB external hard drive that shouldn't need a driver
with Windows XP. The CD it came with only has a driver for Windows 98 on it.
The hard drive is a Freecom Classic Hard Drive for USB 1.1 and 2.0. The
device is recognised, but then I am asked for a driver, which shouldn't
happen. On the Freecom site, they only have drivers for Windows 98. What can
I do?

Hi,

When prompted, indicate C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386, see if this helps.

hi Djw! There are several things you can try to resolve this and I don`t think all of them will fail or if they do just send it back to where you bought it. Try to run windows update then restart you PC and plug your USB HDD - if you get the same error/problem - Update the Drivers of that USB HDD from Device Manager - if that doesn`t help move further to patch just only your System32 folder and if the problem persists, move to the last one which id to run a Live Lunux CD and plug in your device and if it fails I`ll recommend that you send it back to the shop.
