ok im still confused about CAS timings. I saw this powerpoint presentation by corsair found here http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/products/tech/memory_basics/153707/index.html

What makes no sense to me is if the lower the timings are the better it is then why is it that the Corsair PC-4000 is so fast? the timings of that are 3-4-4-8.

this has nothing to do with the first part but do you need any king of memory for an amd 64 3200+? Thanks for the help

Hopefully you understand what im trying to say, i was really tired when i wrote this.

For your first question, PC4000 is really fast because it offers a lot of bandwith, this kind of memory will usually benefit the P4 more because it is bandwith hungry. Now when running at these high speed(ddr500), the board cant run with the low timmings it would usually run at DDR400.

With P4 you will get optimum performance by Overclocking you frontside bus while using some faster memory PC3700/4000. With AMD you will benefit more of the lower timmings like 2-2-2-5...

Second part I assume you mean any kind of memory. Depending one what motherboard, you could have some compatibilty issues read this:

Cas 2 PC3200 performs better than Cas 2.5, which performs better than Cas3.

PC4000 can perform better than PC3200.

They can't make PC4000 Cas2. So you have to decide which is more important, high bandwidth or lower latency.

Sewer pipes run slow, squirt guns spray fast, but the sewer pipe flows more than the squirt gun...on the other hand, you can't spray sewer from the pipe onto your friends (not that you'd want to, but if you ever do, make a video for me).

Those max timings are for that memory at speed, AKA a 250mhz FSB. If you run a lower FSB, say 240mhz, you'll probably get down to 2.5,4,4,7. Go down lower, say 230mhz, you might get 2.5,3,3,7. Go down to stock 200mhz FSB and you might see 2,3,3,6. Fast at high speed is one thing, but fast at all speeds is best!
