Better performance - quality or quantity

I just got a new system with an xp 3200+ CPU and 9800XT video card. In a month or so after a few paychecks refill the bank account i plan on getting a gig of pc3200. For the time being I have a 512MB chip of PC2700 and a 256MB of PC2100. Would I be better off using only the PC2700 to keep the memory performance up or would that extra 256MB be better served. I realize that for normal use the 3200 would be better run by itself but as I do a lot of gaming sometimes my memory image pushes past the 512 mark (especially once doom 3 hits :) )

Thanks for the input

I understand that, like I said will be getting some as soon as money allows. In any event i'm going to go with just the 2700 for now and keep a close eye on my memory imprint, if it gets up to like 510 MB I'll just have to throw the 2100 in there, anything is better then mem misses to the HD after all.

Just use the 768MBs for now, it is not going hurt anything and it sounds like you need the megs more then you need the speed. I would look to get the PC3200 as soon as possible though because you are starving your system. The other components in your system should compensate for the lower memory speed.
