I have been looking for the answer to this question before moving forward with my RAID purchase. The question is:
Is it possible (read easily repeatable and fairly painless) to pull a working RAID 5 array (SATA Hardware based RAID card and associated drives) and install this working array in a system with a brand new motherboard?
Caveat: System OS would NOT be contained in the array. Array would contain DATA only.
Is this possible? Advisable?
Input appreciated.

Pulling existing, configured, and working RAID hardware from one system and putting into another system is technically possible.

Whether it works, or not, is mostly dependent on your RAID controller and it's associated software.

In the case of Promise, Adaptec 131, and LSI Logic this should work with no issues.

NOTE: The assumption here is that by "pulling the RAID" you are talking about the ENTIRE RAID setup and NOT just the drives.

NOTE: Edited a mispelling.
Edited by jim552 on 07/27/04 01:25 PM.

Yep, just pull the card and all the associated parts, hook it up to the new system, put the parts back together in the same order as before, and set up the drivers on the new OS drive.
