I want to build a PC for linux only (it will be my first one )and I want to keep it around $500 or less if possible. Here are the things I need:

Case
floppy
cd rom
hard drive

MOBO ( onboard video, sound and NIC)
CPU
RAM
and whatever essential components required for the preceding

Can some one suggest the components I'll need to have a fast linux system? ( if it goes over $500 , so be it)

It's just use the same as for a cheap fast Windows system.

Generic stuff for Case, floppy, CDROM is probably ok. 3 button mouse not 2 is a must, USB not PS/2 is nicer.

If you want an integrated mobo, I'd go for an nForce with a Duron. Nvidia has drivers for it online - for RedHat 7.2, and Mandrake 8.1 / 8.2. Try to get 256MB RAM, and obviously a 7200rpm drive makes a noticable difference, but see how the money lasts...

Just take an old windows PC and use that when you upgrade. Thats what I do.

That is a nice Garbage Can you have there!

An old windows PC is still just an old PC...

Even Linux benefits from a faster system (especially if you use GNOME or KDE).
