Okay, for over 2yrs I have been using a 56k and getting dial-up speeds of about 46-48, Which I had no real prob with. Now for over a month I cant break 26. My ISP ran a test ( & e-mailed results) and said no probs, Sprint claims no probs. Did the driver dance and re-installed ISP proggy etc, system restore, etc, etc,... while cleaning up my clutter I found an old 'ModemBlaster' which my XP cr8 recognized and gave me a dial-up speed of 57.6, I was like "YES!! No lag-killz!! off to novaworld I go!!" Boy was I wrong. slide show combat much worse than when I was getting 46. Anybody have any clues how on a friday I can game away, but comes monday, clear out of the blue after 2 yrs, stuck with the 26s. Oh yeah this current modem didn't get me 57 all the time, 3Xs so far but it seems to be stuck in the mid 30s. And plz save the 'get cable/dsl/etc...' I live in the mountains of SW Virginia and dial-up is all that is available, U can believe this gamer cares not the price for a better connection, just aint available.
I got off my point
which is
has anybody had similar probs ? any input would be GR8ly appreciatted, even if it is to do what I already did, cuz maybe I zigged when I shoulda zagged.

Well I can't say for sure but it just could be your phone lines. I live way out in the country and our phone lines suck, on my 56.6 connection, I used to get 21, and every now and then (if I was lucky), 30. Take my computer anywhere else and it would connect at 56 everytime.

Has there been any construction near you lately, maybe some more people have been put on the same main box as you recently?

Hmm that is something to look into, we do have new residents on this gravel road. Thanxz 4 the tip.(and nice page you got, had no idea what to expect, but that took me back to my teen yrs.)
Another thing was brought to my attention, "special call features" like caller ID, call w8ing, etc.. Yall tech-heads think that may cause a prob ? Sprint doesn't think so, but they want the cash 4 those features ,so they will be a bit biased.

Thanx yall 4 the eyeball time

We had caller ID on and off there at my house and I never really noticed a difference in connections, but just my expeirence.

Yeah I wanted to make something for my computer, since everyone else has links to there PC, easiest just to throw it in template for my other pages, but thanks!

57600 is the speed your modem is communicating to the computer at, not the speed your modem is dialed out at. My modem connects to my computer at 114k for a 44k dial up connection. So you're not even seeing the connection speed with this new driver. There is a way to change that, but I can't remember how since it's been 5 years since I've encountered that problem.

I know you said you talked to your ISP but maybe another call is in order. My usual connect speed on my dial up is around 46k-48k. One day I noticed my speed had dropped to around 33k and it stayed there for a couple of days. I called and politely let them know I'd noticed the difference. They gave me a different phone # to dial-up to and my connection speeds went back up.

So...ask them for some different numbers to try...

56k is an antiquated technology. If you get a connection, that's all the ISP cares about.

Call your phone company and ask them to perform a data line noise test from you to your ISP. That'll give you an idea of noise.

Also minimize the number of background tasks, make sure you have the most up-to-date modem drivers, things like that. If you have more questions, e-mail me (dj_mittens at bonq dot com).
