Here's a question...if your going to play a game that only supports up to 800x600 resolution, how would it look on an LCD with a larger native resolution? Would it be a smaller box in the middle of the screen with black borders or would it be stretched to the edges? I haven't read anything focusing on this.

Usually a smaller box. At least in my experience.

I've played the original Half Life (late 1998) on my 30" LCD TV panel, and it fills the screen because Half Life supports a resolution of 1280 x 1024.

It all depends upon the particular game's internally supported video resolutions, the graphics card, and the monitor.

So, if the game only produces 800 x 600, then you'll get a windowed effect unless you reduce the monitor's resolution to 800 x 600 (if supported), then you'll get full screen.
