Old Games at Lower Resolutions

Here's a question...if your going to play a game that only supports up to 800x600 resolution, how would it look on an LCD with a larger native resolution? Would it be a smaller box in the middle of the screen with black borders or would it be stretched to the edges? I haven't read anything focusing on this.

  1. Usually a smaller box. At least in my experience.
  2. I've played the original Half Life (late 1998) on my 30" LCD TV panel, and it fills the screen because Half Life supports a resolution of 1280 x 1024.

It all depends upon the particular game's internally supported video resolutions, the graphics card, and the monitor.

So, if the game only produces 800 x 600, then you'll get a windowed effect unless you reduce the monitor's resolution to 800 x 600 (if supported), then you'll get full screen.
