Ok, I have 2 WD Raptors coming my way by wednesday but I have never used SATA connections before. It is my understanding that SATA requires you to install drivers via F6 when installing windows and to do this you have to have a floppy drive with the drives on them and set the CD with windows in it as boot device 1 and the sata drive as boot device 2 (please correct me if I am wrong). My question now is, if I want to format using FAT32 (let me know if this is a bad idea vrs NTFS) will the dos boot disk recognize the sata drive even though the drivers have yet to be installed? Thanks for your help and if these are dumb questions I apologize.

1. Don't use fat32. No >4 GB files, no >40 GB drives... It's a pain. NTFS is what you want to use.

2. You don't have to set the SATA as boot device #2, or even the cdrom as boot device #1 for that matter... just make sure you have the cdrom listed in the boot order somewhere.

Boot from the cd, when windows asks if you have any 3rd party scsi or raid drivers hit F6. Put the driver floppy in and the rest is cake. You have to know what driver to get though, and that is dependent on the chip you're using (nforce2 = silicon image for example).

Yeah the mobo I got comes with the drivers on a floppy disk so finding the drivers isn't going to be a problem. Thanks for the reply.

on the question of fat, I have xp home but it is an upgrade version so I have to install 98 first. Will there be any problems with that. Will I still get the option to install 3rd party drivers on setup? In the bios should I set this drive as a scsi or just a regular hdd1? Thanks for your help.

AMD ME??? Yeah they did me alright.

also, I read somewhere that on average FAT32 is 5% faster than NFTS. Ive tried both, and can't tell the difference. I use FAT32 because if a drive goes dodgey (I.E corrupted boot partition) there are alot of DOS programs that fix harddrive errors, that only work with FAT32 partitions

Neds right I ran an 80 gig in FAT32 for years.

FDisk may not read the disk size correctly, but even it still correctly partitions 80 gig drives.

Yeah, I messed up. What I should have said is that the largest fat32 partition you can create with XP setup is 32 GB.

I guess that means I won't have any trouble installing 98 on my sata hdd. Just thought I'd ask.

Don't assume the drivers on the floppy are the latest versions - go to the manufacturer's website first and check/download as necessary. My setup wouldn't work with the drivers that came on the floppy, I had to go to their website, and it's a real pain when you're in the middle of building a PC and have no net access instantly available.

You don't have to install 98 before you install XP. I have an XP Pro upgrade, but with a 98 disk. I just stick in the XP disc, and load it. Then it says Windows cannot find a previous version of Windows, please insert a Windows 98, 98 SE, or ME OS disk. I insert the 98 disc, it checks it, and then completes the installation. There is no need to install 98 and then upgrade to XP. That would just cause more problems.

awesome. I have the correct bios now and I'm ready to install it. As for the win xp, this will be a lot easier now that I don't have to install 98. Thanks for the help.

I'm going freakin crazy trying to set up this sata drive in Windows. I got a new bios with sata enabled, installed the correct driver for the sata controller on my board (sil image 3112a not ide to sata) and yet when I specify the driver during windows setup it still doesn't work. After the driver is installed windows loads some controllers and drivers. I get to the point where it sez windows is starting up but then I get the message " windows cannot proceed because it does not recognise the hard drive (didn't I already load the @#$% &*% freakin drivers?). I'm about ready to rma this thing and get an ide drive (or pour gasoline on this thing and light it up, which ever comes first). I sure hope someone has an idea because I'm all out of em. I'm gonna look for something on the western digital site but I don't hold out much hope.

This is amazing, I thought I was the only one with this weird SATA problem. I feel your pain, I gave up trying and took my PC to two different shops today, neither could make it work. :frown:

I am going to try and call manufacturer today.
