Home Over Pro

I am going to be installing a new version of WIndows XP home and I
want to get rid of my old Windows XP Pro on the home machine.

I want to place the new installation in the current C:/ partition
which is 100 GB of a 250 GB hard drive. The system partition is
obvioulsy C and the second partition on the drive is labelled G. The G
has lots of data on it.

During Setup, when I get to the point where I want to install on the
C partition which contains the current system, will Setup scan the
system, see the old XP Pro and say it can't be done? Or will Setup ask
me for a qualifying CD so I can then go on and delete the partition?
Or do I need to erase the partition first, then install?

Any help gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

I see that John Barnett has already answered your "how" question,
but I'd like to address the "why?"

Are you aware than XP Home is a subset of XP Professional, and
that there's nothing in Home that isn't also in Professional?
Also, regarding "old" versions and "new" versions, there's really
only been one version of each, except for the two service packs
which are downloadable for free.

So there may be no real advantage to your doing this.

Please cross-post in the future.
Multi-posting is annoying.

Home is a "downgrade" from Pro.
You have to format the C partition.
You have to backup all your stuff on that partition manually (email,
documents, contacts, pictures, etc.)
When done downgrading, you will have to reinstall all applications (Office,
etc.)
When booting from the Windows XP Home CD, it will ask you which partition to
install on - delete the C partition, recreate it, format it and install on
it.

You cannot *upgrade* (i.e., migrate) from Windows XP Professional to
Windows XP Home Edition. That downgrade is not automatic. You will be
forced to format your drive to perform a *new* install of Windows XP
Home Edition (if it is an upgrade then you need a prior version of
Windows to qualify, and Windows XP Professional is not a *prior*
version). It is peculiar that you want to dumb-down the operating
system (from Pro to Home).

XP will scan your system and find that you already have a copy of xp on your
system. You then select a new installation and install from there. It is
better to delete the c partition and recreate another partition, you will
have this opportunity, rather than installing the new version over the old.
Visit my website http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Click the Win AX Faq

and 85 (how do i install windows xp)
