I think i have a hard drive issue. The screen goes blank when i start my laptop. If i change out the hard drive will this help?

No, the screen just stays blank.

Then it's unlikely to be a hard disk issue, more likely to be a motherboard or GPU problem.

For good measure, take out your removable components (hard disk, optical drives, wireless card..) and see if it boots.

Also, try hooking the machine up to an external monitor and see if it outputs any video.
