Windows could not start becuase of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
I got my 10k RPM SATA drive today. I hit F6 and everything during windows setup and it copies all the system files and such, then when it reboots I get that message.

I have another hard drive (IDE) that has two partions, one is C: the other is E:. The SATA comes up as D:

BIOS has SATA enabled, and function set as BASE (Other option is RAID). I have RAID disabled.

How do I get the SATA to be a boot drive?

Go into the boot menu in the bios and make sure the sata is enabled there somewhere. It might come up as something different.

What you SHOULD do though is unhook the IDE drive and reinstall windows on the SATA drive so that windows is on c:

In the BIOS the SATA is enabled, and was set to run as BASE. Didn't work :frown: . So I am tried it as RAID with RAID SATA drivers. Still nothing. Just got done trying leaving the IDE unplugged, and using the SATA as the C: Drive. :frown:

Not sure whats going on.

I searched everywhere, even in the advanced BIOS (Ctrl-F1), and don't see anything. Even have read through all three manuals to the board, can't come up with anything.

Surely this board is capable of booting from the SATA drive? It doesn't detect or show a SATA in the BIOS at all, but, like I said in Windows I can use it, and windows setup sees it once drivers are installed, just won't boot from it.

I know the SATA is enabled, but it has to be in the boot menu. There should be a boot options section where you set the boot order. The SATA controller must be listed there somewhere. It's a seperate section from the straight up enable/disable SATA option.

I set the BIOS to boot from SCSI, then set scsi boot order to SATA. However everything appears to setup right, it won't boot from it though.

I tried everything and nothing seemed to work. So this morning I took it to a local computer shop. Tech couldn't get it to work either. Took it to another shop, tech there couldn't do it either. Called Giga-byte today and after an hour with tech support I have concluded there is something wrong with my SATA controller. I can use it, as long as its not a boot device.

So I guess a new board will be in my furture. :frown:

Did you make sure the jumper was set to allow sata. I can't belive it but I missed that one too. It still didn't solve my problem though.

Jumper??? Don't tell me I missed that. I will actually look at the board closer, but when I checked the manual, it didn't have anything about a jumper. The drive works fine as long as you aren't trying to boot from it?

Are you sure my board (7n400Pro2) has a jumper, or is just some boards?

Iam sure you have tried it anyway, just a suggestion.
Instead of SCSI try another option like Hdd0 or Hdd2 etc, are you sure there is no option for raid instead of SCSI?

No, actually the thought hadn't occured to me. I guess it's worth a try. You would think that sata or raid would be on the boot menu but it's not. I'l check back with the results. I think you're on to something though because the two sata controlers are listed in the bios as 0 and 1. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

On the Giga-byte motherboards Hd-0 and Hd-1, etc. are all IDE HD, the SATA is normally refered to as SCSI. Then under SCSI boot order you have to set it to SATA.

However in my case, it ended up being a bad motherboard.

stupid_tech_geek, is your SATA HD detected? Like right after the IDE drives does it list SATA-link or something similar?

No it is not detected in the regular section of the bios where all the ide hdd's are. The thing is I can see that there's a drive on sata channel 1 (in the sata bios, seperate from the rest) and win setup recognises that the hdd is a mass storage device but it still refuses to load windows on to it. I feel like I've been banging my head against a wall here. There's probably one stupid little setting that I forgot to change and that will fix everything but I don't know where it is. I noticed a storage site that was mentioned in the sticky so I'll check there for more help. I've gotten great answers at toms but this section isn't quite as popular as motherboards so I don't think my question has gotten the same kind of exposure. I'll post back when I have more info.

I have another hard drive (IDE) that has two partions, one is C: the other is E:. The SATA comes up as D:
What happens in that configuration is all the boot-up information goes onto C:. Ntldr boot.ini ntdetect.com all end up in root on C:. Then boot.ini has something like
default=multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

However, if you don't have HD0 (i.e. C: IDE1) in your boot order the computer never tries to boot from C: and the boot will fail. If you then remove the IDE drive from the computer then you still won't be able to boot because ntdetect.com, ntldr and boot.ini still aren't on your SATA drive.

Just remove the IDE drive from the computer, make sure the boot order is set to SCSI-SATA, do an install of XP onto the SATA drive making sure it recognises it as C: and reboot. Should work fine.
