Think the new windows longhorn will be something completely different from XP?

Think that they will bring so many new advantages and so many new features
that will run only on super-computers?

Well here is the lowdown...

A friend of mine just installed one of the latest betas (build5048), and to
be honest, i expected much more...

The only new thing i saw was a new theme (they named it aero if my memory
serves me well) and a better Windows explorer. Everything else is just the
same with Windows XP SP2. The same Device manager, the same network
utilities, nothing new... And where is that so caled sidebar?

As regard the requirments the installation was done on a Celeron D 2.66, 512
ram (single), ATI Radeon 7000, and Quantum Fireball 12GB (ATA 66), and the
system runs almost like on Windows XP

And my friend also faced the first incompability. The HyperSnap DX wont
play, not to mention some old games for Windows 98 (hope the new compability
wizard will be better that the one of XP).

To be honest, i expected much more after 4 years of "development". if
microsoft hasnt something more to show than this, well, what should we expect
the next year, when Longhorn will be released?

The comments are yours

Your friend and yourself are wrong in at least one main aspect: Longhorn
does not have a *beta* version yet. They are still in *alpha* stage so what
you are seeing is not even close to what is going to be presented to the
world. Have patience and don't try to compare alpha to a beta - they aren't
even close to the same thing.

Longhorn is not at the beta stage yet. At best it is still in the alpha
stage. The way it looks and functions now will not be how it will look or
functions when it is finally released.

No real surprise here. Every other week it seems MS is making an
announcement about something that's been removed from Longhorn (eg WinFS).
And apparently any of the remaining useful features of Longhorn will be
backported to WinXP.

Yes. The 'innovative' file system was removed etc.

This attrition of invention is by far the most troubling situation. Surely
with billions invested we can expect greatness.
