Raid 1 and read performance

DOes Raid 1 increase read performance in standard desktop apps (i.e. loading programs, content, games, etc...)?

  1. RAID1 is about keeping hold of your data (it is simply mirrored on the second drive), if one drive dies you have lost no data. There wouldn't be an increase in speed, more likely a decrease.

RAID0 offers a speed increase by reading/writing the data across two drives.

  2. With most bog standard controllers, no. There are algorithms in more advanced controllers that are supposed to allow reads to occur from both drives and hence improve speed. Take a look through some of the controller reviews at xbitlabs and see what affect it has - not alot.
