DVD/CD problem! Help!!!

Hi all,

Hope someone can shed light on this problem!! I said I would have a look at a friends laptop whos DVD/CD drive was not reading disks, it is a NEC CB2100a. Every time I put a CD in it stopped responding in my computer and would not read anything. Anyway I bought a second hand one off Ebay and This will not read and data files or music cd's but it will read DVD's. I thought the best thing just to reinstall the OS (XP) with the recovery disk, still will not read music cd's or data cd's, the drive just stops responding and will not eject the disk. Is there something I am missing on this?? I have checked the device manager and according to windows it is working and enabled. This is driving me mad I have been searching all over for an answer but cannot find anything. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
