I connected microphone to my PC but found that it is not working. I checked
the recording controls and found that although I could see different devices
and their sliders in the panel, I was not able to select any of them through
their check boxes, so I cannot enable the microphone. I have Windows XP-SP2,
Realtek AC97 Audio Controller with ASUS sound effect manager.

I would appreciate any help on how to enable check boxes on the recording
control panel. (The boxes do not appear greyed out but just do not
check/uncheck after clicking)

Thanks in advance.

I've got the same problem with my Asus on-board sound. You'll have to
completely uninstall the sound software and then reinstall the certified
drivers from the Asus site in order to make it work. If you do it, and it
doesn't work, it means that you haven't removed the old stuff completely. I
use TotalUninstal - version2 is still freeware - to monitor the installations
and removal of all my software. That way I can track down all the changes
that it's made to my hard drive.

As a last resort, install the sound software using TotalUninstall. Then use
the properties from that install to guide you to the areas that you need to
clean out. Then uninstall using TotalUninstall - and then go back and clean
out what's left over. Then reinstall the sound software and it should work
OK.
