Hello, when I switch on my pute a message comes up on the monitor 'Signal cable not connected' also the keyboard and mouse are dead, I have tried a cable I know works but it still shows the same message. I am wondering if the motherboard has developed a fault and I am at a loss.

If you have tried known working items and they don't work with your computer then it's a clear indication that something is wrong and the motherboard can be the cause.
If the monitor says no ignal then it's not getting a signal from the video card or intergrated vide which ever you have.
There are two things hat it could be and the first is the motheroard and the second is the power supply.
Since it would be good to eliminate one so you can focus on the other , you can do the power supply " paper clip test ".

If you don't want to watch a video then you can visit this site;

After verifying the power supply and it passes then you can focus on the motherboard , are there any lighs coming on at all ? Any post beep code ? Any hard drive sounds ?
Depending on how long you have had the motherboard and if it was a prebuilt computer or you built it yourself there may be still warranty left on the motherboard.
