SyncMaster 941BW and VGA cable?

I recently purchased the above noted LCD and am using it with my laptop. I can't believe all the positive reviews I have ready about this screen and yet I don't like my current display - obviously the problem is mine and not that of the hardware :-)

The easiest way to explain what I don't like (and therefore ask for help) would be seeing colours on the screen. For examle, to the left and right of where I am typing right now appear grey on my laptop but white when viewing through my LCD monitor.

I find the picture a bit blurry but my biggest complaint would be that black font appears grey, I can't see light colours as they appear like white.

If anyone wants to walk me through some ideas I think I can keep up :-) Possiblities are drivers, VGA cable (my laptop doesn't have DVI), monitor settings... what else?
