I have a simple question. Why, in all of Microsoft's excellent development of
various games, has no-one thought of an online based Mechwarrior game? I'm
not exactly familiar to the revenue drawn from the various sales of the
Mechwarrior series, but it must be feasable to create a game based off of the
Mechwarrior "universe" that the general public would love to play. In fact I
have considered this in a great amount of detail, being both an avid MMORPG
player, a solid Mechwarrior fan, and a good conduit through my job to the
gaming community, and I have come up with the backbone of a truly spectacular
idea. The greatest thing about this game is that nearly all of the components
exist, and the ability for growth and expansion is endless. Below I have
given a painstakingly brief summary of what I have thought up as Mechwarrior
Online:
I. The Universe of Mechwarrior
Multiple worlds with different features and technology already
existing with "inner-sphere" and "clan" technology. Steiner and Davion both
exist as vast empires. Certain worlds are known as homes of mercenary clans
(guilds), and multiple areas on each planet accessable from dropships,
depending on fees and military clearance (discussed later)
II. Character creation
Characters have various attributes such as perception, agility,
endurance, memory, charisma, and intelligence. Theses attributes are both
directly and indirectly tied into every facet of the game. Training can occur
from various civilian, mercenary or military locations, and experience
improves these attributes and skills. The key is versatility. Some people
want to excell in scouting and light vehicles such as LRM carriers or
Harrassers. Others want to be light or medium mech pilots focusing in missile
technology. Others in trading for the lowest price on weapons or chassis.
Still others want to be mission coordinators in mobile or stationary HQ's
providing crucial mission intelligence. Many of the things that could very
well be present in this game are a fresh approach to a gaming experience.
Endless possibilities await as players form into groups that are self
sufficient and both PvP and PvEnvironment flourish.
III. Artificial Intelligence
NPC pirates set ambushes for players. Steiner patrols find a davion
recon base and set strikes to defend their homeland, mercenary clans seek out
to destroy thier "competition." Various AI themes and simple actions can be
performed in the game. Starting with the basic traders, trainers and quest
givers, NPC's can make all the difference in the game. Reactions can be based
on alignment, general charisma, battlefield achievments, and familiarity.
Imagine the players reaction when he goes into the shop and reads: "So, THIS
is the mech that won the battle on Davion IV?" Or perhaps, "Looks like this
mech was purchased through less than legal means... not that the etched out
mark where the ID number was gave it away..." Military rank could also apply,
delivering discounts and even sabotage attempts.
IV. Gameplay
A never-ending battle for players to have the most influence in the
universe. The anility for one pilot to duel another without the interference
of anyone else. Player-Owned and operated bases with each component built or
purchased (i.e. turrets, gates and walls, fuel tanks and generators, and
repair and re-arming bays). Camouflaged mechs ambushing each other in the
night. Epic battles, that everyone talks about. Tactical manipulation and use
of various terrain and weather. Gladiator curcuits recruiting PC and NPC
Mechs (Remotely Operating Autonomous Mechs, or R.O.A.M system). Trading
stations bustling with online transactions. All this and more can easily be
made possible.
Looking back, I have still managed to elaborate apon this idea perhaps a
little too much, but truth be told, I feel very passionately that this game
could succeed and provide a great amount of profit to Microsoft Games. I
simply hope that this is read and taken seriously, as I am not just some kid
out there in America. Thank you for your attention to my suggestion, and I
also wish to say keep up the great work and dedication. If I may make one
other simple request: Please respond to let me know that this was read. There
would be nothing worse than this letter drifting around in cyber-space, not
knowing if it was even viewed. Thanks!
